"A Living Sacrifice"

“A living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” A “living sacrifice” points to continuous surrender. Unlike sacrifices that were slain, this offering remains alive, meaning the yielding is daily and ongoing. The challenge is not in dying once, but in remaining surrendered while still living.

“Holy” speaks of being set apart—belonging entirely to God and designated for His purposes. This stands in sharp contrast to the world’s obsession with “finding your purpose,” which often centers on self-discovery, personal ambition, and fulfillment on one’s own terms. In Christ, purpose is not something we invent or chase independently; it is something we are brought into. Our lives are no longer oriented around what we want to become, but around what He has already determined.

“Acceptable” carries the idea of being pleasing to God, aligned with His will and character. Not every offering is pleasing; it must be shaped by what He desires. Our purpose, then, is not self-defined—it is surrendered, received, and lived out in alignment with Him.

This is described as “reasonable service,” meaning it is logical, fitting, and appropriate in light of God’s mercy. When we truly understand what has been given to us, this level of surrender is not extreme—it is the only reasonable response.

Devotion, then, is not about occasional acts of spirituality but a life consistently aligned with God’s will. The sacred is found in the ordinary when the ordinary is surrendered. Life itself becomes the altar.
