” God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” — Numbers 23:19 (NASB)
One of the most comforting truth in Scripture is the absolute reliability of God’s Word. Human promises often falter, circumstances shift, and even our best intentions prove unreliable. But there is one constant, that is, we can rely on God’s word. His word never fails and will surely come to pass.
The text today assures us that we can count on God’s word. “God is not a man. He does not lie and does not change His mind.” The passage continues with rhetorical questions that demand a resounding “No”: “Has He ever spoken and failed to act?” “Has He ever promised and not carried it through?” The prophet Malachi repeats the same truth: “I am the Lord, and I change not.” Malachi 3:6
If God has said it, He will certainly do it. His plan of the ages, revealed in Scripture, is steadfast and sure. For those who trust in Jesus Christ as their Saviour, “all the promises of God in Him are yes and amen” Corinthians 2: 1:20. All God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It signifies that God is absolutely faithful, and every promise in the Bible is guaranteed and trustworthy for belivers, leading to God’s glory.
When doubts arise and circumstances seem uncertain, we can rest in the unchanging character of our God. His Word is living and active, and it will accomplish His purpose (Isaiah 55:11). That which God says, God does. When God speaks, we can count on His word.
